Last Sunday I set out on my first art demo adventure. Ever since I started painting Liquitex has been my go to brand, always fair priced and good quality. Naturally when I got the e-mail from the art store I jumped on it. I made it up into the classroom I immediately noticed something. I am surrounded by women ranging from 45- 80, all very conservative looking.....and ONE man who happens to have tattoos and tiny stretched lobes. As these women spoke to each other I sat quietly listening, hoping to get a feel for them and their styles. " I just finished my FIRST canvas!" one proudly proclaimed. " I just finished my SECOND!" chimed in another. I almost fell out of my chair! one woman went on to explain how her instructor for the painting classes she took told her she could paint at home too and not just wait for the class and she was amazed and excited because she hadn't thought of it. I make polite conversation with these women, internally reflecting on how many different types of people are sitting in the class. Thinking about what drives us all to pick up the brush and how we can all be so different and still all drawn to this one mission, to create. They asked me if I was a "real artist" which opened up a whole floodgate of other philosophical train of thought. The profound "what does REAL artist" really mean? Yes I believe there is a huge difference between a painter and an artist, BUT what makes the defining strokes? I don't pretend to know. The demo went on and I learned a few technical things, a little more bout the brand and some of the great things some artists are doing with the different lines of the paints. Overall it was a fun experience and I even was given a little goody bag of a few products to try. I plan on going back for another soon. *Much Love*
I was reading a book about marketing and the technical side of art and ran across something that dug in under my skin and I need to vent about it. First things first, the statement--> If you're not making a legitimate living off of your art you are just a hobbyist. I disagree. If this statement was true then the likes of Van Gogh were "just hobbyists". Can you see the flaw? In my opinion a hobbyist is a person who occasionally paints, casually enjoys taking an art class or two and for whom art is not an obsession. I feel like using the term hobbyist belittles the artist that don't fit into such a small group. I understand where the writer was going in this thought saying you just cant be considered a professional without making a living at it but the wording truly made it disrespectful. This also doesn't take into account for the artists that spend their every waking moment self-promoting, creating and trying their damnedest to make a living at it and just can't seem to succeed. In the real world VERY few artists can make enough. You could translate this across different career fields too. If you're working at a company and received certification and work doing said job but still can't pay all your bills with that income are you not a professional? I just see this as a really black and white view of a rainbow situation. Sound off and comment letting me know what you all think too! *Much Love*
As you've probably noticed I LOVE giving gifts of my art. Even if the subject is something I'm iffy about like cartoon characters because they're not my original thoughts, there is something so satisfying about making someone so happy. Here are my latest 2 given to my little loves Lilly and Holly. Holly screamed w excitement for the longest! It was AMAZING! *Much Love*
I signed up for an e-course on marketing and galleries and after a dozen assignments and such I'm really digging it! Some stuff is common sense and some are handy little tips from the gallery owner's perspective. I cant wait to see what else the course has to offer. I see this definitely being the beginning of an online class addiction! haha I LOVE learning things and it fuels me. Much Love- Lady Jane
My poor right hand girl, my hp pavilion laptop died this week leaving a gaping hole in my life. I was so sad but it opened up an opportunity to upgrade to something more fitting for my new needs. I bought my old baby 5ish years ago and I had totally different needs then and being an older model it was kinda lunky. Now I'm definitely not talking down on the old girl and shes gotten me a long way but It was time to move on. I did a long pros and cons list comparing 3 different models and brands to make sure I was choosing right because choosing a computer is prob going to be a semi long term purchase. I was looking for a camera, usb drive, small size, energystar rating and a few other things. HP Pavilion Chromebook hit all points so here we go and enjoy the ride haha I'll let you know how it goes!
